NEW AIRLINE LUGGAGE LIMITS
Apr 30th, 2008 by Joan
Several of the airlines are further restricting checked baggage: Continental and Delta will remain the same, allowing only one checked bag on domestic flights in the US. The maximum weight of this bag is 50lbs. Additional checked bags are $25 each, with the same 50lb. limit. Beginning August 28, 2008, American, Northwest, United and U.S. Air will charge $15 for the first checked bag, and $50 for the second checked bag, all with the same 50lb weight limit. Carry on weight limit is still the same for all airlines: 40lbs. for one bag. You can visit individual airlines’ web sites for baggage dimensions. One ”personal item” carry on is also allowed (purse, briefcase, camera bag, small backpack, computer case, etc.). Any liquid taken in a carry on bag must be in a 3 0z bottle (or less). All bottles containing liquids must fit into one quart size zip-loc type baggie.
Most domestic flights no longer serve meals or snacks. However, on some longer flights, snacks and meals may be offered for purchase. To find out what is offered on your flight, visit the airlines’ web site and look up each flight. Descriptions and prices will be listed. (Some shorter flights do not offer this service). You are allowed to take a sandwich or snack through security, if desired. The item must be in a clear container or ziploc so that it can be seen clearly at the checkpoint. Drinks are not allowed through the security checkpoint, but most airports have drinks for purchase inside the secure area.
International flights have different baggage restrictions. You may still check 2 bags, and each bag can now weigh a maximum of 50 lbs. Carry on sizes and weights remain the same as domestic.
